We demand the truth about British involvement in torture
Written by Moazzam Begg Friday, 13 January 2012The announcement by the CPS and Scotland Yard regarding the decision not to pursue certain individuals from British intelligence in relation to allegations of complicity in torture may, on the face of it, seem to have brought the matter to a close. That, however, is not quite it.
In 2010, the director of Cageprisoners, former Guantanamo detainee, Moazzam Begg, hired me to work on a project he had been formulating for about a years’ time: How the UK’s anti-terrorism laws affect wider British society. I have been working with Moazzam as my boss for 18 months now.
“You are now the property of the United States and you have no rights.” These were the first words to greet me and other prisoners held in the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. Ten years on little has changed.
