In 2010, the director of Cageprisoners, former Guantanamo detainee, Moazzam Begg, hired me to work on a project he had been formulating for about a years’ time: How the UK’s anti-terrorism laws affect wider British society. I have been working with Moazzam as my boss for 18 months now.

“You are now the property of the United States and you have no rights.” These were the first words to greet me and other prisoners held in the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. Ten years on little has changed.

Last week, after a mere ten hours of jury deliberation, TarekMehanna was convicted of all seven charges he faced. The first set of counts against him - including conspiracy to provide material support to Al-Qaeda, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and the attempted provision of material support to terrorists – are the most controversial, and the most worrying.

It is 10 years since the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act came into force and made it legal to intern foreign nationals in Britain on the basis of secret intelligence evidence.
