This year has brought with it many changes to Cageprisoners as we seek to help those who have been abused in this ‘War on Terror’. Over the last few years I have had the opportunity to travel much of the world visiting the victims of horrific counter-terrorism policies, and it is always with a heavy heart that I feel we are not able to do more than we currently are.

Perhaps that is the test that we have been given by Allah SWT, in that we must do the utmost that we can with the limited resources that have been given to us.

Rather than to highlight what we have not been given, I would like to express my gratitude to Allah SWT in allowing this last year to be our most successful to date. With the assistance of Allah SWT, we have gone through a number of changes that have increased our capacity to be able to do more for our clients. The following are just a few of the many blessings that we have been given:

  • The employment of Feroz Ali Abbasi—a former Guantanamo prisoners who graduated in Social Policy from the London School of Economics.
  • The employment of Andy Worthington—author of the book The Guantanamo Files and who is considered by many to be one of the leading authorities on detentions in the War on Terror.
  • The procurement of office space close to the centre of London.
  • A completely new website which has allowed the organisation to reach its readership in new and innovative ways.
  • An internship programme that has given us the capacity to increase our work.
Those are just a few examples of how Cageprisoners has moved forward over the last 12 months. It has only been through your help that we have managed to continue our work and to be able to increase our output.

One of the main changes we have made to our work over the last year has been the addition of a new area to our remit. After lengthy discussions between the team, we decided that we should take on the issue of extrajudicial killings due to the increased use of drone attacks in Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The trend under the Obama administration to have suspected individuals killed by these unmanned aerial vehicles has resulted in the killing of hundreds of innocent individuals. We hope that by now beginning to conduct research into this phenomenon, that we will be able to put pressure on the US government to stop using a technique which is proving to be counter-productive.

It is only through the Grace of Allah SWT that Cageprisoners still continues to function today and that we are able to continue helping those who are in great need.
